What Makes Bull Tough Flooring Different From Other Calgary Flooring Companies?

Unlike many general flooring companies in Calgary, we work exclusively with solid hardwood. As dedicated hardwood flooring specialists, our focus is on refinishing, repairing, and installing hardwood floors with dustless sanding systems and lifetime installation warranties.

How Long Will the Process Take?

The length of the process depends on the size and service type of the hardwood floor project. 3 days for dustless hardwood floor refinishing in Calgary for an average 1000 sq. ft. floor. 5–6 days for an average 1000 sq. ft hardwood floor installation. Most projects less than 500 sq. ft can be completed in less than 2 days.

How Can I Prevent Scratches On My Hardwood Floors?

To keep your hardwood floors in peak condition, we recommend placing felt pads under furniture legs, use area rugs in high-traffic areas, and keep pet nails trimmed. Avoid dragging furniture across the floor.

What Kind of Maintenance Can I Do at Home?

Regular maintenance of hardwood floors can extend the longevity and reduce the need for costly repairs. We recommend using a microfiber mop or cloth with a hardwood floor cleaner when cleaning your floors to minimize damage to your hardwood floors. We can also complete a maintenance coat on your floors as an effective, inexpensive method to maintain your floors and prolong their life.

Do You Sand Under the Fridge, Stove, or Dishwasher?

You can leave appliances in place, and we can refinish up to them; however, if you’re going to be changing the colour we recommend removing the fridge and stove. You can remove or reinstall them or have us take care of it.

Should I Remove the Baseboards?

You have a choice. If you leave them in place, minor paint touch ups will be required. If you choose to remove them the effort will be rewarded. Removing the baseboards allows us to refinish right up to the wall so when the baseboards are replaced you will have a clean and sharp looking finished edge. We call the baseboards the picture frame to the art it contains.

Should I Remove the Sink and Toilet in the Washroom?

Yes, in a tight space like a half bathroom you typically need to remove the toilet and sink. In some situations, we can refinish around them; in this case, please clean the toilet base thoroughly.

Can You Use a Matte or Flat Finish?

Yes, the sheen of the finishes ranges from high gloss to ultra-flat. Our most popular product is a high durability, low maintenance, ultra-flat hardwood floor finish.

How Do I Pick a Stain Colour?

Picking the stain is a simple but thorough process. First we discuss your options. Secondly, we use pictures and videos to show you your options and thirdly, we sand the floor down the bare wood and then put a few stain samples down as a reference point. From there, we can customize the colour to your liking.

How Much Do You Charge to Install/Refinish a Floor?

Hardwood flooring installation costs in Calgary and refinishing costs will depend on several factors, so we don’t use a specific dollar per square foot to calculate your quote. The job is broken down into various stages and priced accordingly.

How Often Should I Refinish My Hardwood Floors?

The frequency in which you should refinish your hardwood floors depends on the amount of foot traffic and the condition of the floors. Generally, hardwood floors should be refinished every 7–10 years.

What Are the Benefits of Dustless Hardwood Refinishing?

Dustless hardwood floor refinishing uses advanced vacuum technology to capture dust at the source, reducing airborne particles and minimizing cleanup. It has quickly become a popular choice for hardwood flooring in Calgary and across the world. Some of the benefits include minimized dust and allergens, improved air quality and enhanced safety, better finish quality, environmentally friendly processing, and less cleanup and downtime.

What is the Floor Sanding Process?

Bull Tough is proud to offer dustless hardwood refinishing in Calgary. The process involves floor preparation, checking and securing the floor, checking moisture readings, confirming stain colour, sanding hardwood floor, applying stain, applying topcoats, cleanup, inspection, touch ups, and final inspection.

What Products Do You Use on the Hardwood Floor?

For hardwood flooring in Calgary, there are only a few professional grade products available. For staining, we use Bona DriFast Stain. This is a great product. They have a good selection of base stain colours ranging from white through to ebony, which can easily be custom mixed to your preference. These are quick-drying finishes and have excellent durability. The most popular finish we use is ultra-low shine.

What’s Hot in Hardwood Flooring for 2024

As we approach the midpoint of 2024, it’s the perfect time to review the hottest trends in hardwood flooring. This year has seen an exciting mix of styles and innovations that have captured the attention of homeowners and interior designers alike. Whether you’re looking for inspiration for your next renovation or want to stay ahead of the curve, Bull Tough Flooring has the insights you need.

The Year’s Top Trends: A Look Back at What’s Been Popular

2024 has introduced several standout trends in hardwood flooring. Here are some of the most popular choices that have defined interior spaces this year:

Wide Plank Floors

Wide plank hardwood floors have continued to dominate in 2024. Their expansive, elegant look adds a touch of luxury to any space. Homeowners are increasingly opting for 3 ¼” planks, appreciating how they can make rooms appear more spacious and open. This trend aligns perfectly with modern minimalist design principles, where fewer lines and seams contribute to a cleaner, more cohesive look. Something to consider when choosing wide plank floors is that newer wider plank floors have a shelf life due to their thin “wear layer,” whereas a traditional solid hardwood floor will last a lifetime due to its ability to be resanded. Solid hardwood floors are also easier to fix and maintain.

Expanding Narrow Plank Floors

If you already have hardwood flooring in your home and are looking to expand it, adding new narrow plank boards is a great way to expand the hardwood and work with your existing floor. Adding new hardwood to match the existing floor has huge cost savings, making it easier to achieve your dream design. Although narrow plank floors may be perceived as an older look, with the right color and finish type, they can be very modern.

Natural and Light-Toned Woods

Natural and light-toned hardwood floors have been a significant trend this year. Woods like white oak and maple, with their subtle grains and pale hues, create a bright, airy atmosphere that many homeowners find appealing. These lighter tones not only enhance the natural light in a room but also provide a neutral backdrop that complements various decor styles, from contemporary to rustic.

Eco-Friendly Flooring

Sustainability continues to be a key consideration for homeowners, and 2024 has seen a rise in the popularity of eco-friendly hardwood flooring options. Reclaimed wood and sustainably sourced new hardwoods are favored choices. Bull Tough Flooring is committed to offering environmentally responsible options that do not compromise on quality or style.

Mixed Width Planks

Another trend gaining momentum this year is the use of mixed width planks. By varying the width of the boards within a single floor installation, homeowners can achieve a more dynamic and unique appearance. This approach adds visual interest and can make a space feel more custom and personalized.

On the Decline: What’s Falling Out of Favor?

While new trends emerge, some older styles and finishes are losing their appeal. Homeowners are increasingly moving away from certain hardwood flooring choices that once dominated the market. Here’s a look at what’s falling out of favor in 2024:

Glossy Finishes

High-gloss finishes, which were once a staple in hardwood flooring, are seeing a decline in popularity. While they offer a polished and sophisticated look, they also show scratches, dust, and imperfections more readily than matte or satin finishes. Homeowners are now favoring more practical, low-sheen finishes that offer both beauty and ease of maintenance.

Dark Stains

Dark-stained hardwood floors, though still elegant, have become less popular in 2024. These floors, while striking, can make spaces feel smaller and more enclosed. They also tend to show dust and pet hair more noticeably. The shift towards lighter, more natural wood tones reflects a broader trend towards open, airy interior spaces.

Predictions: Upcoming Trends for the Rest of the Year

As we look forward to the second half of 2024, several emerging trends are poised to make a significant impact on the hardwood flooring market. These upcoming trends reflect advancements in technology, design preferences, and a growing emphasis on sustainability. Here are our predictions for the hardwood flooring trends that will dominate the rest of the year:

Innovative Installations

Looking ahead, we anticipate a rise in innovative installation patterns. Herringbone and chevron patterns are expected to gain further popularity, offering a stylish and sophisticated alternative to traditional straight planks. These patterns add a layer of visual interest and can make any room stand out.

Smart Flooring Solutions

As technology continues to evolve, we predict an increase in smart flooring solutions. This could include hardwood floors with built-in sensors that can monitor temperature and humidity levels, helping to maintain optimal conditions for the wood and improve overall home comfort.

Custom Stains and Finishes

Customization is also set to be a significant trend for the remainder of 2024. Homeowners are increasingly looking for unique stains and finishes that reflect their personal style. Custom color blending and bespoke finishes will become more accessible, allowing for truly personalized hardwood flooring options.

Enhanced Durability

With the busy lifestyles many lead, the demand for durable and low-maintenance hardwood flooring is expected to rise. Advances in finishing technologies will likely produce more resilient surfaces that can withstand daily wear and tear while retaining their beauty.

Conclusions

The hardwood flooring trends coming up in 2024 reflect a blend of timeless elegance and modern innovation. From wide planks and natural finishes to eco-friendly choices and smart solutions, there’s something to suit every taste and need.
